Gears, were machined with grinding process to meet the surface quality and size precision requirements because of its high hardness after heat treatment. With the development of the society, grinding process already can’t meet the customers’ requirements of high efficiency and low costs. The use of cbn insert make it possible that hard turning gears. But it will meet some difficulties, how can cbn insert meet all these requirements?
1.The gears have high hardness after heat treating, how can cbn meet all the requirements?
The hardness will be HRC58~HRC62 after heat treatment, traditional cutting tools will be easily chipping, which will affect the production efficiency, and change the insert frequently will affect the gears surface.
CBN Insert has high hardness, is called superhard tools together with diamond tools. And the hardness with Rock hardness is HRC95~100, so it has good abrasive resistance and strong high temperature red hardness. It will keep stable performance in high temperature.The tool life will be 10 times more than traditional cutting tools.
2.Some gears exist interrupt turning condition, can cbn insert perform well ?
Interrupt turning condition refer that it has hole or keyway when machining the gear inner bore. In the process, CBN Insert need impact resistance. Compared with carbide insert, cbn insert has large brittle, so it is a big difficult problem. Finally, Halnn researched BN-H21 pcbn insert which can be used for interrupt turning condition.

3.Some large scale gears exist interrupt turning condition, what performance of cbn will be?
Some gears of large scale machine have large diameter, and the hardness after heat treatment will reach HRC60, some deformation will reach 2mm, if with grinding process, the process efficiency will be low, the appearance of cbn insert make it possible of hard turning instead of grinding.
Specific for large allowance gears, we recommend solid cbn insert BN-S20, which can obey heavy interrupt turning, it not only can be used for large allowance, but also can make sure not chipping in the interrupt turning condition.BN-S20 make it possible that rough machining hardened steel in interrupt turning condition and is one breakthrough in superhard cutting tools industry.
