How do you improve the surface finish in machining gray iron

First, Total roughness Ra can be controlled by feed rate f (mm/r), and edge radius re in mm of the insert. For finishing operation, the angle choice will present chips to run on the finished surface. Cutting speed is usually increased in finish according to roughing. Minimal chip thickness and feed rate are also important parameters to insure a stable cutting process, the surface finish and reduce tool wear.

Second, Considering turning application of the gray cast iron, most are brake disk and brake drum machining. Halnn, as one company that offer solutions for the customers, we have made testing on ceramic tools as well as cbn inserts on mentioned application (machining brake disk and brake drum) to improve the surface roughness of the components. Both of them can operate with higher cutting speed than carbide insert. And considering the costs per component and the processing time, Halnn BNK30 CBN Inserts are more economical solutions for machining brake disk and brake drum.

I hope above could be useful to you.
