With the increasing use of high-precision CNC machine tools in the manufacturing industry, how to improve productivity,
reduce production costs, shorten production cycle and delivery time to improve overall competitiveness, is a problem that
enterprises have been thinking about, and the emergence of high-speed cutting technology has attracted much attention.
 

In order to achieve high-speed cutting, not only high-precision machine tools but also cutting tools are required. Choosing 
the right cutting tool can do more with less.
 

Current tool materials include carbide tools, ceramic tools and superhard tools (CBN tools and diamond tools). This article 
mainly explains the selection of cutting tools in the field of ferrous materials, so diamond tools are not introduced.
 

Tool material analysis for high speed cutting
 (1) Carbide tools: Due to the low hardness of the cutter body, the maximum linear speed is controlled at 350 m/min, and 
excessive wear is caused, which is not suitable for high-speed cutting.
 (2) Ceramic knives: Hardness and wear resistance are higher than that of carbide tools but the brittleness is an indisputable 
fact. It is mainly used in the finishing process to avoid continuous cutting and large margin cutting.
 (3) CBN tool: It is the first choice cutting tool for high speed cutting. It is the most widely used in the field of ordinary gray 
cast iron and hardened steel.
 

CBN tool for high-speed cutting gray cast iron 
Gray cast iron is widely used in automobiles, machine tools and other industries. For example, brake discs and brake drums
for auto parts are mass-produced. Therefore, high-speed cutting technology can greatly improve production efficiency and
reduce total production costs. The use of CNC machine tools for high-speed cutting of gray cast iron requires the cooperation
of cutting tools.
 

CBN tool itself has high hardness, line speed can reach more than 1000m/min (on the basis of machine rigidity), wear resistance
is excellent, and dry cutting is adopted to avoid environmental pollution caused by cutting fluid and reduce total production cost.


For example, Halnn first developed CBN material BNK30 grade for gray cast iron. It uses nano-scale binder and high-purity CBN
particles to optimize the ratio. It can be used for cutting gray cast iron at cutting speed of 500-2000m/min. High-speed machining;
can meet the stable cutting of brake discs, brake drums, engines, gearboxes, etc., especially in the field of finishing, the performance

CBN tool for high-speed cutting hardened steel 
The hardened steel hardness is generally between HRC 58-62. The tool will generate a lot of heat under high-speed cutting conditions.
If the temperature exceeds the temperature of the tool, the tool will wear out quickly or collapse. Therefore, the tool material for 
high-speed cutting hardened steel needs It has high temperature red hardness, wear resistance and chipping.
 

At present, the tool materials for high-speed cutting hardened steel are mainly CBN tools. CBN tools can be cut normally at a high 
temperature of 1000 °C, and dry cutting is used to achieve clean production.
 

Halnn CBN Tools BN-H10 and BN-H21 grades are high-speed cutting tools developed for hardened steel, used in continuous cutting
and interrupted cutting.
